Light-harvesting Complex Protein and Dye-sensitized Solar Cells

Light-harvesting complex, or LHC, contains a photosynthetic dye that converts light energy into chemical energy. A typical photosynthetic dye is chlorophyll which has magnesium-porphyrin as its basic skeleton. Dye-sensitized solar cells have been gathering attention as a next-generation battery which converts light energy into electrical energy using dye similar to LHC. The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells depends on the photoelectric conversion efficiency of converting light energy to electrical energy, and this efficiency largely depends on its dye. Therefore, dye with high photoelectric conversion efficiency is necessary for developing high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells. Our laboratory is working on the development of new dye for practical application of dye-sensitized solar cells.
